Thanksgiving Week Honor Roll: George Mason Takes Top Honors

George Mason’s Natalie Butler, Nic Cardaño-Hillary Earn A-10 Women’s Basketball Weekly Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Mason’s Natalie Butler was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week while teammate Nic Cardaño-Hillary earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were for games played Nov. 20-26.
Butler helped the Patriots to a 3-1 week, averaging 17.8 points, 13.8 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 assists while recording four double-doubles last week. The graduate transfer from Fairfax Station, Va., had one of the best games of her career against Drake in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Hoops Classic on Friday in Boulder, Colo. She scored a career-high 26 points and shot a personal-best 10-of-13 from the field. She also grabbed 11 rebounds as the Patriots won their sixth straight for their longest winning streak in six years. She capped off the week with 17 points, 17 rebounds - the most by a Mason player in four years - three blocks and two assists in a loss to Colorado in the championship game of the Rocky Mountain Hoops Classic. Butler has posted seven straight double-doubles, which is tied for the most in the country. She also leads all of Division I with 107 rebounds.

Cardaño-Hillary continued her great start to her freshman season, averaging 16.3 points and 3.3 assists in four games last week. The freshman from Madrid, Spain, has now scored in double figures in all eight games of her collegiate career. On Friday, she scored 21 points in a 87-75 victory over Drake for the Patriots' sixth straight win in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Hoops Classic in Boulder, Colo. It marked the third time this year she has scored more than 20 points. She made four 3-pointers and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. She also dished out a career-high six assists against the Bulldogs. She followed that performance with 17 points and three assists in a loss on Saturday against Colorado in the championship game of the tournament.

Davidson’s Justine Lyon averaged a team-best 16.0 points for the week and a had a season-high 23 points against Princeton. Freshman Katie Turner averaged 11.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in games against UNC Asheville and Princeton…Dayton’s Jenna Burdette averaged 15.5 points and shot 60 percent from the field last week. She had a team-high 19 points in a loss to Toledo Wednesday…Duquesne’s Chassidy Omogrossotied a career-high with 25 points en route to earning MVP honors at the Cavalier Classic. For the week, she averaged 22.3 points as the Dukes recorded wins over Iona, NC A& T and Virginia…Fordham’s G’mrice Davisrecorded her fourth consecutive double-double to begin the 2017-18 season with 14 points and 17 rebounds in a win over (RV/RV) Northern Colorado. Freshman Bre Cavanaugh posted 10 points, four rebounds and two assists over 35 minutes in the win against Northern Colorado…George Washington’s Kelli Prange was named to the All-Tournament teams at the Paradise Jam after averaging 13.0 points and 5.7 rebounds over three games. Freshman Neila Luma led George Washington with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting in a win over Wisconsin…Amy Griffin led La Salle to the Christmas City Classic title and earned MVP honors after averaging 23.0 points over two games. La Salle freshman Shaquana Edwards averaged 8.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals in a 2-1 week for the Explorers…Massachusetts’ Genesis Rivera had a team-high 19 points and also added six rebounds in a thrilling win over Liberty. Freshman Paige McCormick hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to lead UMass over Liberty. She finished with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting…Richmond’s Micaela Parsonled the Spiders in a 2-2 week by averaging 15.3 points and 5.8 rebounds. Freshman Alex Parson scored a career-high 27 points in a loss to Wright State…St. Bonaventure’s Mckenna Maycock averaged 19.7 points and 9.0 rebounds over three games this past week. She scored a career-high 23 points and matched a career-high with 12 rebounds in the win over UMBC…Sara Veilleux led Saint Joseph’s to a 2-0 week averaging 19.0 points per game while earning Hawk Classic MVP honors…Saint Louis’ Jackie Kemph averaged 15.7 points and 9.0 assists over three games last week…VCU’s Tera Reed recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds against Mercer.

Weekly Honor Roll: Griffin, Layfield Nab First Awards Of Season

Dayton’s Layfield, La Salle’s Griffin Share A-10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Honors

La Salle’s Edwards Earns Rookie of the Week Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Dayton’s JaVonna Layfield and La Salle’s Amy Griffin were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week while La Salle freshman Shaquana Edwards earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards, the first of the 2017-18 season, were for games played over college basketball’s opening weekend that began Friday, Nov. 10.

Layfield averaged a double-double last week with 15.0 points and 16.0 rebounds over a two-game stretch last week. The senior forward from Louisville, Ky., posted a career-high 20 points and 22 rebounds in the season opening win over Harvard. The 22 rebounds were the second-most ever recorded in a single game in program history. Layfield followed that performance with another double-double grabbing 10 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Tulane. She was named the Tournament MVP and to the All-Tournament team at the Maine Tip-Off Tournament.

Griffin scored 30 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field and 7-of-10 from 3-pt range to lead the Explorers to a season-opening win over Lafayette. The senior guard/forward from Atlanta, Ga., also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and recorded seven assists and four steals.

Edwards recorded 17 points, seven assists and five rebounds in her collegiate debut in a win over Lafayette. The redshirt-freshman guard from Hartford, Conn., also collected four steals and was 7-of-14 shooting from the field including 3-of-9 from 3-pt range.

Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll

Davidson’s Justine Lyon averaged 15.5 points and 6.0 rebounds this past week for the Wildcats. She has now scored in double-figures in 23 of her last 25 games overall. Davidson freshman Sarah Donovan averaged 8.5 points and 3.0 rebounds over her first two collegiate appearances…Fordham’s G’mrice Davis, the nation’s returning leader in double-doubles, picked up right where she left off posting 10 points and 11 rebounds against UMBC on Friday. Freshman teammateJohanna Klug led the Rams with 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field to lead Fordham past UMBC in the season opener…George Mason freshman Nicole Cardano-Hillary scored 22 points in her collegiate debut in loss to No. 24/23 Michigan in the first round of the Preseason WNIT…George Washington’s Kelli Prange was the Colonials’ leading scorer and rebounder in both contests this weekend, averaging 19.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in a pair of hard-fought losses. Freshman Neila Luma averaged 6.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game for GW…UMass junior Genesis Rivera recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds and was one of six scorers in double-figures against Maine-Fort Kent followed by a game-high 21 points against Towson. UMass freshman Bre-Hampton Bey averaged 12.5 points, 6.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds in two wins for the minutewomen…Rhode Island’s Elemy Colome led at scorers with 19 points, nine assists, five steals and four rebounds in URI’s win over UMass Lowell…Richmond’s Micaela Parson averaged 17.5 points per game for the Spiders on opening weekend including 23 in the road win over Columbia. Freshman teammate and younger sister, Alex Parson, averaged 12.5 points and 6.0 rebounds to go along with 3.5 steals…St. Bonaventure’s Danielle Migliore scored a career-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting to lead the Bonnies past Niagara in the season opener.  SBU freshman Emily Calabrese set a new school record for steals in a game by a freshman with four against Niagara…Alyssa Monaghan got off to the perfect start in 2017-18 after scoring a career-high 23 points on 8-of8 shooting in Saint Joseph’s 93-69 victory on Sunday. After missing the last three seasons recovering from a stroke on her freshman move-in day, SJU’s Avery Marz made her collegiate debut, playing 12 minutes and tallied three points and a pair of rebounds…Saint Louis’ Maddison Gits posted her first career double-double (16 points and 17 rebounds) in the Billikens’ 60-59 win over Indiana State.
