WEDNESDAY A-10 FINALS....

In the battle for second place, St. Bonaventure prevailed at home, 74-64 over George Washington for the inside track on the #2 seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament in Richmond.

La Salle draws a half-game shy of tying VCU for 7th in the league with a 68-63 win over a suddenly struggling Duquesne. The Dukes have dropped 3 of their last 4 by a combined 8 points.

Fordham defeated George Mason 71-52, trying to improve their seed position in the crowded middle range of seeds in the Atlantic 10, while top seed Dayton kept rolling with a 67-58 win over St. Louis.

And, in a game covered earlier tonight here, Richmond pulled away from VCU and held off one late charge to pick up an important 73-60 victory in the Robins Center. The Rams are the first Atlantic 10 team to finish their regular season, 9-7 in conference play, 21-8 overall.

Updated standings are to your right!

Consistency: Richmond's Revenge Comes Over Forty Solid Minutes

Keri Soppe ran a maestro performance Wednesday night as the Richmond Spiders exacted revenge for an earlier heartbreaking loss to cross-town rival VCU, defeating the Rams 73-60 at the Robins Center.

Soppe was perfect: 3 of 3 from the field, two from three-point land, and 2 of 2 at the line for 10 points. She had nine assists, and spent the evening dissecting VCU's zone defense, finding teammates on the baseline for jumpers, and down low to Genevieve Okoro, who led the Spiders with 17 points.

"This was Keri Soppe's best game as a Spider", Richmond head coach Michael Shafer said after the game.

"It's my job as point guard to control the tempo as best I can," Soppe explained. "They were scoring 80, 85 points per game, so we had to limit that. If that means walking up the ball, then we do it."

In the end, the Rams gave the Spiders a gift that aided their desire to control tempo: cold shooting. After shooting 33 percent in the first half, VCU was just 12-for-37, 32.4 percent, after intermission. Their three-point game was missing, finishing the night with just four treys in 26 attempts.

"We were flat to start the game, and you can't be that way against anybody in this league," VCU head coach Marlene Stollings said.

Her team is finished for the regular season, done at 9-7 in Atlantic 10 play, 21-8 overall, and a La Salle loss away from being the #7 seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum.  Stollings has nine freshmen on the roster and plans to take some of the down time to allow them to rest up, and bring fresh legs to downtown, just blocks from their Siegel Center home.

But she also wishes she could bring something more.

"You hate to finish with a loss like this, I'd rather be able to play it up tomorrow," Stollings noted. "But we'll take the bye time to rest and to scout, for sure."

Robyn Parks will rest up for her final Atlantic 10 Tournament tilt, hoping to lead the Rams to a special weekend at home. She led all scorers with 27 points and added 10 rebounds. Parks shot 10-of-16 from the field. The rest of Rams shot 13-of-54, perhaps the most stark statistic of the night that showed how Fury , save a brief time in the second half where the Rams cut a 23-point margin to ten, didn't make the 15-minute trip west.

For Richmond now, a trip up I-95 North to George Mason, who took the Spiders to overtime January 15th before falling. The Spiders come off a satisfying win ("we were extremely irritated, to say the least, at how the last VCU game ended", noted Genevieve Okoro) but mindful of just how limited they are in personnel.

"We're gonna shoot and walk through Mason tomorrow at practice," Shafer noted. "As for the Tournament? Man, I'll just take them one game at a time."

The Colonials' key was a massive 25-2 run midway through the first half that built a 35-21 edge. The Rams never threatened again. Megan Nipe led GW with 19 points while Jonquel Jones ripped down 17 rebounds.

George Washington is now tied for fourth in the A-10 at 8-4, while VCU holds on to 8th place, a half-game ahead of cross-town rival Richmond.

WEDNESDAY FINALS: Dayton Stays On Top; George Mason Wins First-Ever League Game!

Before we head to the leaders, we congratulate George Mason for capturing their first-ever Atlantic 10 league victory tonight, a 101-73 win at home over UMass. Janaa Pickard led the Patriots with a double-double, 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Georgetown transfer Sandra Ngoie added 23.

George Mason hit ten three-pointers en route to the victory. Congratulations to head coach Nyla Milleson, her staff, and the players on the breakthrough victory.

It was harder than they probably expected, but Dayton leaves Rhode Island still firmly atop the A-10 standings, defeating the Rams 73-66. A lot of the Flyers' struggles were self-made, shooting just 32 percent from the field. Andrea Hoover led Dayton with 21 points and 11 boards, helping head coach Jim Jabir's Flyers the lone one-loss team in the Atlantic 10.

Dayton sends their thanks to St. Louis for helping them separate from the pack as second place St. Bonaventure fell to the Billikens tonight, 72-65. The Bonnies fell to 8-3 in the Atlantic 10, tied now for second with Duquesne.

And, in a classic "Big 5" battle in Philly played before the snowstorm arrived, Cindy Griffin's St. Joseph's Hawks picked up a very important win, 76-63 over La Salle. The win helps the Hawks leapfrog the Explorers in the A-10 standings, now tied for 5th with George Washington.

GW will try to break that tie with a win at home tomorrow night versus VCU. As of now, the 9pm ET game Thursday night is still on, but the East Coast winter storm that continues all day Thursday may change that.

UPDATED league standings to the right on this page!

WEDNESDAY LINEUP!!

Here's the lineup of four games in the A-10 today, one afternoon, three evening:

UMass (0-10, 3-21) at George Mason (0-11, 6-18), 7PM ET

NOTES:

--The Bonnies are at the western outpost of the conference, trying to stay a game behind in the loss column to league leader Dayton, and hoping for a Rhode Island upset of the Flyers later tonight.

--HUGE "Big 5" game in Philly, especially for the homestanding Hawks. The defending Atlantic 10 Tournament Champions are currently in 7th place in A-10 standings.

--Someone will get the first league win tonight as the Minutewomen and Patriots face off in Northern Virginia. They'll get the game in just ahead of an impending winter storm moving in late today to the Old Dominion from the south. If George Mason wins, it is their first-ever league victory.

If This Is A Tourney Preview!: Richmond 78, Fordham 77 (2 OT)....

Before the Great Snow of 2014 descended upon Richmond, Virginia, the hometown Spiders and Fordham Rams raised temperature levels to an all-time high in an instant classic Tuesday night at the Robins Center.

Fordham head coach Stephanie Gaitley saw the renovated Robins Center for the first time. It's a place she called home as head coach beginning in 1985, resurrecting a moribund program in the process.  Her winning ways are now home in the Bronx.

But last night, the Spiders, playing a different style of ball due to injuries, proved that the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament will feature upwards of at least nine teams capable of pulling off that magic run to the title, and the accompanying NCAA Tournament bid.

In their 78-77 double overtime victory, Richmond built a first-half lead, took a 10-point advantage to intermission, then stalled at 48 points midway through the second stanza, allowing Erin Rooney and company to slowly chip away at the deficit before finally taking the lead at 55-52. From that point on, it was back and forth, tit for tat for the rest of regulation, and both five minutes overtime periods.

Heroics went to Kristina King, whose three-pointer forced double overtime, and Janelle Hubbard, whose shot with 7.7 seconds remaining sealed the win. Each of them scored 29 points.

Rooney led Fordham with 22 points, while Samantha Clark and Emily Tapio added 17 apiece.

T-MINUS 21 DAYS to the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women's Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum!

Sunday, February 9, 2014

SATURDAY FINALS:

A huge win for Jim Jabir's Dayton Flyers, separating themselves from one key rival in the A-10 standings with a road victory over Duquesne, 87-77.  After an 8-1 conference start, Duquesne has lost their last two and now must travel to play the other team ahead of them in the standings, the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure.

The Bonnies picked up an 88-66 win in Amherst over hard-luck UMass to wrestle sole possession of second place in the conference. St. Bonaventure shot 57.6 percent from the floor as Nyla Rueter scored a career-high 27 points.

La Salle held off Rhode Island in a defensive struggle, 50-42, to stay within reach of the top five in the conference. Micahya Owens led the Explorers in their annual "Pink Game" for the Play-4-Kay Breast Cancer Initiative with 18 points, Alicia Cropper had a double-double, the second of her career, tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds.

In the game of the day, VCU survived, literally, at the buzzer, holding off cross-town rival Richmond 63-62 to get back on the winning track. For a moment, it looked like the Spiders had taken one on their rivals' home floor, but after consulting replays, Genevieve Okoro's apparent game-winning layup was waved off, the officials saying it was not released in time.

Robyn Parks led the Rams with 19 points, while Kristina King led all scorers with 21 for Richmond.

NOTE: Richmond will be on TV for their next game, home to Fordham on Tuesday, 7pm, on CBS Sports Network.

Fordham held off George Washington in a top 5 league battle 67-58 Saturday.

And in Fairfax, George Mason watched a heartbreaker put yet another dagger into their quest for their first-ever league victory, leading but not able to hold off St. Louis in the end. The Billikens escaped the Beltway area with a 65-62 win.

WEDNESDAY FINALS: Dukes Win Streak Ends....

The streak is done. Duquesne's recent roll through the A-10 ended at the hands of George Washington 80-68 Wednesday night, as the top portion of the league standings compact even more!

Also in the mix? St. Bonaventure, who knocked off St. Joseph's 73-67, and, of course, preseason choice Dayton, who survived a monster performance from VCU's Robyn Parks to win at home 73-69.

Add Fordham to the formula, too, as they hold off St. Louis 56-45, and La Salle, who survived a huge scare to defeat George Mason 66-60. It was a very tough loss for the Patriots, still in search of that elusive first-ever Atlantic 10 conference victory.

Rhode Island picked up another league win, defeating UMass 73-64.

Updated standings are to the right!  And remember, ONE MONTH FROM TODAY is "First Round Thursday" at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Tournament HERE in #RVA at the Richmond Coliseum!!

FIRST FINAL OF SATURDAY (AND FEBRUARY):

St. Bonaventure makes it five straight A-10 victories, 74-67 over Fordham....

THE SATURDAY LINEUP!

The calendar has turned to February, which means the action gets hotter and the wins more crucial as the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum starts in a mere 33 days!

Here's the lineup of games on tap for today, six in all!

FORDHAM (6-2, 17-4) at ST. BONAVENTURE (5-2, 16-6), 1pm: After a 1-2 start, the Bonnies have won four straight league games, but will have to contend with the Rams' all-everything guard Erin Rooney, 2nd in the A-10 in scoring at 19.2 ppg. Fordham also leads the league in scoring defense, giving up just 57.5 ppg. The Bonnies' scoring defense? Almost as good, 3rd in the league at 59.5 ppg.

VCU (5-3, 17-4) at ST. JOSEPH'S (5-3, 16-5), 2pm: VCU has struggled the past two weeks, but hope that their 112-86 crushing of George Mason has cured what ails them. The league's leading scorer, Robyn Parks, leads them in Philadelphia where the defending tournament champions await. Don't let the Hawks live at the free throw line!  They shoot 80 percent from there.  The loser will be two games out of third place, their margin for error to finish in the top four and avoid playing an opening round tournament game on Thursday March 6th that much thinner.

RHODE ISLAND (1-7, 6-15) at GEORGE WASHINGTON (5-3, 14-7), 2pm: The Colonials have an easier road today to stay within a game of 3rd place as the Rams come to DC. Rhode Island's carrying card is their defense, 2nd in the Atlantic 10 giving up just 58 points per game. But GW is 3rd in scoring offense at just shy of 77 points per game. Something's gotta give.

LA SALLE (5-3, 10-10) at ST. LOUIS (2-5, 7-13), 5:30pm EST, 4:30 CST: The Billikens got a huge win Wednesday at St. Joseph's and looks to carry that momentum to their home floor against La Salle. Erin Nelson leads St. Louis in scoring, averaging 14 points per game. The Explorers are looking to shake off a poor offensive showing last time out in a 56-39 loss to Richmond.

GEORGE MASON (0-8, 6-15) at DAYTON (5-1, 12-5), 6pm: The road to the Patriots' first-ever league win doesn't get any easier tonight when they tip at second place Dayton. The Flyers have three of the A-10's top 11 scorers, led by Andrea Hoover (15.9 ppg). The Patriots look to Janaa Pickard (13.9 ppg) as well as Georgetown transfer Sandra Ngoie. The Flyers are tied in the loss column for first with Duquesne.

DUQUESNE (7-1, 15-6) at RICHMOND (4-4, 10-11), 7pm: The Dukes hold a game edge in a win column over Dayton for first place as they come south to Tournament Central to play in the newly-refurbished Robins Center. The Spiders' defense played well in their 56-39 win over La Salle earlier this week and must go the rest of the season with freshman sensation Olivia Healy, gone with a knee injury.  The Dukes have won six straight and experienced victory in their last trip to the Capital City, beating VCU in the Siegel Center January 22nd.

Follow any of our HCS Media Network Twitter feeds (@henricosports, @cfieldsports, @hanoversports) for live updates of scores during the afternoon and evening. We use the hashtags #A10WBB and #RoadToRVA.

UMass is idle today.
