Cardaño-Hillary, Luma Share A-10 Rookie of the Week Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Dayton’s Jenna Burdette was selected as the GEICO Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week while George Mason’s Nicole Cardano-Hillary and George Washington’s Neila Luma were chosen as the league’s Co-Rookies of the Week. The awards, announced Monday, were for games played Feb. 12-18.

Burdette, a senior from Coolville, Ohio, led the Flyers to a win over Fordham, clinching at least a share of the A-10 Regular Season Championship. With 27 points and eight assists on Senior Day, Burdette helped Dayton win its 15th straight game while shooting 10-of-19 (.526) from the field, 4-of-8 (.500) from three-point range, and 3-of-3 (1.000) from the free throw line.

Cardaño-Hillary, a freshman from Madrid, Spain, averaged 19.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals in a pair of wins last week. Against VCU, she scored 19 points on 8-of-14 (.571) shooting with six rebounds and three steals. She followed that performance with 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half, in a 78-63 victory over St. Bonaventure. She has scored in double-figures in all 28 games this season and is currently third in league in scoring averaging 17.7 points per game.  

Luma, a freshman from Macungie, Pa. averaged a double-double with 11.0 points and 12.5 rebounds on 9-of-15 (.600) shooting from the field.  She recorded 8 points and 11 rebounds in a mid-week win over Massachusetts, followed by 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting in a road win over Saint Louis.

Davidson’s Mackenzie Latt recorded her seventh double-double of the year at UMass, while moving into third all-time in scoring with 1,533 points…Katie Turner shot 47.4 percent from beyond the arc on 9-of-19-shooting for the Wildcats…Duquesne’s Chassidy Omogrosso scored 26 points on a career-high 10 field goals in their win against Saint Louis…Mei-Lyn Bautista made a career-high five three pointers to finish with 15 points for George Washington in their win of Massachusetts...George Mason’s Natalie Butler extended her consecutive double-double streak to 27 games after recording 24 points and 23 rebounds a win over St. Bonaventure…Maggie Mulligan averaged a double-double (16 points, 13 rebounds) this week for Massachusetts…Richmond’s Micaela Parson scored 24 points in a win on the road at St. Bonaventure and is the only player in the A-10 that ranks inside the top 20 in points per game, assists, steals, and rebounds…Alex Parson scored a combined 20 points in Richmond’s 2-0 week…Saint Joseph’s Chelsea Woods averaged 17 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists for the Hawks…VCU’s Tera Reed recorded her fourth double-double of the season, grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with 12 points in the Rams’ close loss to Richmond.

Conference Schedule/Scoreboard: February 13--18

Dayton is on the threshold of the top seed in the 2018 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship, while Duquesne and Fordham fight for the second seed, and the bye to the quarterfinal round at the Richmond Coliseum that comes with it.

Meanwhile, Richmond moves into eighth place over Davidson, while VCU has moved into a three-way tie for tenth with three conference games remaining.

After the top two seeds earn byes, the first round of the Championship will be held on campus sites on Tuesday, February 27th:

Butler Continues Big Season, Named Player Of Week

La Salle’s Edwards Named A-10 Rookie of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Mason’s Natalie Butler was named as the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week while La Salle’s Shaquana Edwards earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were for games played Feb. 5-11.

Butler averaged 22.5 points, 17 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game last week over two games. In the victory over Massachusetts, the graduate student from Fairfax Station, Va., scored 30 points, grabbed 19 rebounds, blocked two shots and made 8-of-9 from the free throw line. On Wednesday, she scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a loss to George Washington. Butler leads the country in rebounding (15.9 rpg) and double-doubles (25). She also ranks first in the A-10 in scoring (18.6 ppg) and is just the second player in Division I women's basketball history to have recorded at least 25 consecutive games with a double-double in a season.

Edwards, a redshirt freshman from Hartford, Conn., averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds in a split week for the Explorers. She had 18 points and a game-high seven assists in a win over Saint Louis. She followed with 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists in a narrow loss to Richmond.

Dayton’s Lauren Cannatelli led the Flyers to a pair of wins last week and averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 assists and shot 40 percent from beyond the arc…Duquesne’s Julijana Vojinovic scored a career-high 28 points to go with seven assists in a win over VCU last week…G’mrice Davis matched her career-high with 21 rebounds in Fordham’s win over Davidson…Fordham freshman Bre Cavanaugh scored a game-high 19 points in the win over Davidson…George Mason freshman Nicole Cardano-Hillary averaged 17.0 points, 2.5 steals and 2.0 rebounds last week and has scored in double-figures in all 25 games…La Salle’s Adreana Miller scored a season-high 25 points to go along with a career-high six three-pointers in a win over Saint Louis…St. Bonaventure’s Mariah Ruff had 30 points on 10-of-21 shooting and was 6-of-12 from beyond the arc in an overtime loss to VCU…Returning to the lineup after missing several games, Saint Joseph’s Chelsea Woods led the Hawks to a 2-0 week and averaged 14.5 points and 7.0 rebounds…Saint Louis’ Jackie Kemph recorded back-to-back 20 points games and averaged 21.0 points and 7.0 assists for the week.

Conference Schedule/Scoreboard: February 7--11

Undeer three weeks remaining in the regular season, as defending champion Dayton keeps hold on the top spot in the Atlantic 10, while Duquesne and Fordham are in a battle for the second seed, and other bye, currently, to the quarterfinals of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship coming March 2-4 to the Richmond Coliseum. Teams finishing third through eighth get to host First Round games at their home arenas on February 27th.

A big Richmond win Saturday at La Salle ties them with Davidson for eighth place, but the Wildcats hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Spiders have more work to do in order to host a first round game.

Fordham’s Cavanaugh Named A-10 Rookie of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Mason’s Natalie Butler and Saint Louis’ Maddison Gits were named as the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week while Fordham’s Bre Cavanaugh earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were for games played Jan. 29-Feb. 4.

Butler averaged 24.5 points, 16 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 3.0 blocks, and 2.0 assists in a pair of road wins last week. The 6-foot-5 graduate student from Fairfax Station, Va., scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in a 76-63 win at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday. She also had four blocks, four steals, and two assists as she shot 9-of-14 from the field. On Sunday, she scored 27 points and hauled in 15 rebounds for her 23^rd straight double-double, which leads the country and is the fourth-longest streak in Division I women’s basketball history. She also had three steals, two assists, and two blocks. She has now scored 20 or more points in eight games this season.

Gits, a senior from Fitchburg, Wis., averaged 24.5 points and 14.5 rebounds in a pair of Billikens wins this week. Against Fordham, she posted a career-high 34 points (just three shy of the school record) and pulled down 15 rebounds in the thrilling double OT win. Against Davidson, Gits went for 15 points and 14 rebounds. For the week, she shot 18-of-30 (.600) from the field, 3-of-4 (.750) from beyond the arc and 10-of-14 (.714) from the free throw line.

Cavanaugh, a freshman from Allamuchy, N.J., set a new Atlantic 10 season-high with 37 points on 12-of-30 shooting, 5-of-8 from behind the arc, and 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. She scored the Rams’ final 10 points in regulation, including clutch free throws with 10 seconds left, and eight points in the double overtime period. The 37 points were a new Fordham freshman record and the fourth-most among all players. Cavanaugh followed that up with an all-around game against Rhode Island, tallying a career-high seven steals, second-most in a single game in program history, in addition to her 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. For the week, she averaged 28.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 steals.

Davidson’s Mackenzie Latt averaged a double-double with 26 points and 10.5 rebounds, while shooting 47.7 percent and pocketing seven total steals…Freshman Katie Turner averaged 13 points, 2.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists, which draining 6-of-13 shots from downtown for the week for Davidson…Dayton’s Jenna Burdette  scored 18 points and dished out four assists while going a perfect 10-for-10 from the line, which sealed the victory against previously unbeaten Duquesne…Julijana Vojinovicaveraged 23 points and 6 rebounds while shooting 55.2 percent for the  week…George Mason freshmanNicole Cardano-Hillary has scored in double figures in all 24 games of her career and ranks third in the A-10 in scoring (17.6 ppg) and first in steals (64)…George Washington’s Mei-Lyn Bautista turned in a career day in the win over La Salle, finishing with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting and dished out six assists…Massachusetts’ Maggie Mulligan posted back-to-back double-doubles against Richmond and La Salle, and now has 29 career double-double performances…Abigail Johnsonrecorded her first career double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds in St. Bonaventure’s game against George Washington.
