Before the Great Snow of 2014 descended upon Richmond, Virginia, the hometown Spiders and Fordham Rams raised temperature levels to an all-time high in an instant classic Tuesday night at the Robins Center.
Fordham head coach Stephanie Gaitley saw the renovated Robins Center for the first time. It's a place she called home as head coach beginning in 1985, resurrecting a moribund program in the process. Her winning ways are now home in the Bronx.
But last night, the Spiders, playing a different style of ball due to injuries, proved that the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament will feature upwards of at least nine teams capable of pulling off that magic run to the title, and the accompanying NCAA Tournament bid.
In their 78-77 double overtime victory, Richmond built a first-half lead, took a 10-point advantage to intermission, then stalled at 48 points midway through the second stanza, allowing Erin Rooney and company to slowly chip away at the deficit before finally taking the lead at 55-52. From that point on, it was back and forth, tit for tat for the rest of regulation, and both five minutes overtime periods.
Heroics went to Kristina King, whose three-pointer forced double overtime, and Janelle Hubbard, whose shot with 7.7 seconds remaining sealed the win. Each of them scored 29 points.
Rooney led Fordham with 22 points, while Samantha Clark and Emily Tapio added 17 apiece.

SATURDAY FINALS:
A huge win for Jim Jabir's Dayton Flyers, separating themselves from one key rival in the A-10 standings with a road victory over Duquesne, 87-77. After an 8-1 conference start, Duquesne has lost their last two and now must travel to play the other team ahead of them in the standings, the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure.
The Bonnies picked up an 88-66 win in Amherst over hard-luck UMass to wrestle sole possession of second place in the conference. St. Bonaventure shot 57.6 percent from the floor as Nyla Rueter scored a career-high 27 points.
La Salle held off Rhode Island in a defensive struggle, 50-42, to stay within reach of the top five in the conference. Micahya Owens led the Explorers in their annual "Pink Game" for the Play-4-Kay Breast Cancer Initiative with 18 points, Alicia Cropper had a double-double, the second of her career, tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds.
In the game of the day, VCU survived, literally, at the buzzer, holding off cross-town rival Richmond 63-62 to get back on the winning track. For a moment, it looked like the Spiders had taken one on their rivals' home floor, but after consulting replays, Genevieve Okoro's apparent game-winning layup was waved off, the officials saying it was not released in time.
Robyn Parks led the Rams with 19 points, while Kristina King led all scorers with 21 for Richmond.
NOTE: Richmond will be on TV for their next game, home to Fordham on Tuesday, 7pm, on CBS Sports Network.
Fordham held off George Washington in a top 5 league battle 67-58 Saturday.
And in Fairfax, George Mason watched a heartbreaker put yet another dagger into their quest for their first-ever league victory, leading but not able to hold off St. Louis in the end. The Billikens escaped the Beltway area with a 65-62 win.

WEDNESDAY FINALS: Dukes Win Streak Ends....
The streak is done. Duquesne's recent roll through the A-10 ended at the hands of George Washington 80-68 Wednesday night, as the top portion of the league standings compact even more!
Also in the mix? St. Bonaventure, who knocked off St. Joseph's 73-67, and, of course, preseason choice Dayton, who survived a monster performance from VCU's Robyn Parks to win at home 73-69.
Add Fordham to the formula, too, as they hold off St. Louis 56-45, and La Salle, who survived a huge scare to defeat George Mason 66-60. It was a very tough loss for the Patriots, still in search of that elusive first-ever Atlantic 10 conference victory.
Rhode Island picked up another league win, defeating UMass 73-64.

The calendar has turned to February, which means the action gets hotter and the wins more crucial as the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum starts in a mere 33 days!
Here's the lineup of games on tap for today, six in all!
FORDHAM (6-2, 17-4) at ST. BONAVENTURE (5-2, 16-6), 1pm: After a 1-2 start, the Bonnies have won four straight league games, but will have to contend with the Rams' all-everything guard Erin Rooney, 2nd in the A-10 in scoring at 19.2 ppg. Fordham also leads the league in scoring defense, giving up just 57.5 ppg. The Bonnies' scoring defense? Almost as good, 3rd in the league at 59.5 ppg.
VCU (5-3, 17-4) at ST. JOSEPH'S (5-3, 16-5), 2pm: VCU has struggled the past two weeks, but hope that their 112-86 crushing of George Mason has cured what ails them. The league's leading scorer, Robyn Parks, leads them in Philadelphia where the defending tournament champions await. Don't let the Hawks live at the free throw line! They shoot 80 percent from there. The loser will be two games out of third place, their margin for error to finish in the top four and avoid playing an opening round tournament game on Thursday March 6th that much thinner.
RHODE ISLAND (1-7, 6-15) at GEORGE WASHINGTON (5-3, 14-7), 2pm: The Colonials have an easier road today to stay within a game of 3rd place as the Rams come to DC. Rhode Island's carrying card is their defense, 2nd in the Atlantic 10 giving up just 58 points per game. But GW is 3rd in scoring offense at just shy of 77 points per game. Something's gotta give.
LA SALLE (5-3, 10-10) at ST. LOUIS (2-5, 7-13), 5:30pm EST, 4:30 CST: The Billikens got a huge win Wednesday at St. Joseph's and looks to carry that momentum to their home floor against La Salle. Erin Nelson leads St. Louis in scoring, averaging 14 points per game. The Explorers are looking to shake off a poor offensive showing last time out in a 56-39 loss to Richmond.
GEORGE MASON (0-8, 6-15) at DAYTON (5-1, 12-5), 6pm: The road to the Patriots' first-ever league win doesn't get any easier tonight when they tip at second place Dayton. The Flyers have three of the A-10's top 11 scorers, led by Andrea Hoover (15.9 ppg). The Patriots look to Janaa Pickard (13.9 ppg) as well as Georgetown transfer Sandra Ngoie. The Flyers are tied in the loss column for first with Duquesne.
