George Mason’s Butler Named Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Year; Dayton’s Green Voted Coach of the Year

A-10 Announces Top Women’s Basketball Awards


NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Mason’s Natalie Butler was named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Year while Dayton coach Shauna Green was voted A-10 Coach of the Year. The league announced its annual awards Thursday in advance of the A-10 Championship heading to the Richmond Coliseum for the quarterfinals, semifinals and final, which begin Friday.

Fordham’s G’mrice Davis was named the Defensive Player of the Year, while George Mason freshman Nicole Cardaño-Hillary received Rookie of the Year honors. Richmond’s Micaela Parson was named the league’s Most Improved Player. George Washington’s Kelli Prange was named the Sixth Woman of the Year.

The major awards, the 15-member All-Conference teams, the All-Defensive and All-Rookie teams were all nominated and voted by the league’s 14 head coaches. The women’s basketball sports information directors selected the All-Academic team.

Butler leads the A-10 in scoring at 18.7 points per game and rebounding at 16.4 rebounds per game. She currently leads the nation in several categories including rebounds per game, total rebounds (509) and double-doubles (30).

Green, in her second season leading the Flyers, led Dayton to a record of 22-5 overall and 15-1 in the Atlantic 10. Dayton won the regular season title and will be the top seed for the A-10 championship for the second consecutive season.

Davis anchored the top scoring defense in the A-10 this season allowing only 55.6 points per game. She was second in the league in defensive rebounds (10.3 per game) and also averaged 1.6 steals per game.

Cardaño-Hillary, a six-time Rookie of the Week award winner finished fourth in the A-10 in scoring at 17.9 points per game and scoring double-figures in every game. She also led the A-10 in steals (81).

Prange averaged 12.1 points and 5.8 rebounds in only 21.9 minutes per game while coming off the bench for George Washington. Prange played in 22 of GW’s 29 games, starting eight contests.

Parson earned Most Improved honors this season after increasing her scoring average from 11.2 points per game to 18.6 points per game this season, the second-highest total in the league.  Parson scored 20 or more points in 13 games this season and she currently ranks in the top 20 In the league in 10 different categories.

The 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinals begin Friday with games being streamed for free on the A-10 Network. 2018 Championship Field Set: Dayton, Duquesne Earn Byes To RVA

Dayton Earns Top Seed for the 2018 A-10 Women’s Basketball Championship

Flyers Secure Championship Top Seed and First Round Bye for Second Straight Year


NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Dayton, which won the Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball regular season title with a 15-1 league record, will be the No. 1 seed for next week’s A-10 Women’s Basketball Championship at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va.

The 2018 Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship will feature six first-round games being played on campus sites on Tuesday, Feb. 27 before heading to Richmond, Friday, March 2 through Sunday, March 4 for the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship final games.

The Flyers have secured a bye and will play at 11:00 am in the quarterfinals on Friday, Mar. 2 against the winner of No. 8 seed Richmond (8-8) or No. 9 seed Davidson (7-9).

Duquesne (13-3), earned the second seed, which is their highest championship seed in program history, and also secured a bye. The Dukes will face the winner of seventh-seeded Saint Louis (9-7) and No. 10 seed Massachusetts (6-10) at 4:30 pm Friday.

Fordham (12-4) earned the third seed, and will host No. 14 seed Rhode Island (1-15) in the first round Tuesday at 7:00 pm ET.

George Mason will receive the fourth seed for the championship. The Patriots finished the season with a record of 11-5 in the A-10 and will host No. 13 seed St. Bonaventure (3-13).

George Washington finished 10-6 in league play to take the fifth seed as a result of a head-to-head tiebreaker with Saint Joseph’s. The Colonials will play La Salle at home Tuesday. Saint Joseph’s, the No. 6 seed, will face No. 11 seed VCU in the first round.

La Salle and St. Bonaventure both completed the regular season with a record of 3-13. La Salle was tabbed the 12th seed as result of a head-to-head tiebreaker over St. Bonaventure, who was slotted 13th.

All first round and quarterfinal games will be streamed live on the A-10 Network through Atlantic10.com. Saturday’s semifinals will air at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, while Sunday’s championship final will be on ESPNU and streamed on the ESPN App at noon.
